[Commonplace book], [early 19th century].

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of primarily light or satirical verses, anecdotes, and newspaper clippings. Handwritten verses include a charade; a political satire; a humorous epitaph at Dymock, Gloucestershire; and a lighthearted poem titled A Tale of the Rhine. The volume also contains numerous newspaper clippings, which include humorous advertisements; an anecdote of the Logan Stone in Cornwall from the Taunton Courier; a humorous poem titled The younger brother's prayer; and a report of Madame Vestris's farewell speech at the Olympic Theatre dated March 1833.

Lucia Elizabeth Bartolozzi Vestris (March 3, 1797 – August 8, 1856) was an English actress and a contralto opera singer, appearing in works by, among others, Mozart and Rossini. She was born in London in 1797, the first of two daughters of German pianist Theresa Jansen Bartolozzi and art dealer Gaetano Stefano Bartolozzi.
